The holding of trout called trout station varies throughout the year. Many variables define their position in the river. This article is intended as a memory aid and may help you in your reading of the water and in the power of locating the right positions throughout the season.

Where to fish for live bait in whitewater?
We do not practice drift fishing with natural bait with the same method depending on whether we are in the opening period or the summer vacation period, necessarily the trout does not have the same behavior and its behavior is different. Taking into account the biology of trout, the thermic of water and the natural environment in which it evolves helps us to understand its behavior according to the seasons and to adapt our practice accordingly. It is then easier to locate the right positions and thus better flush it out.
Differences between spring and summer period
The fario trout, cold-blooded animal, likes fast and cool waters. It appreciates the mountain and piedmont areas for the habitat it is offered and the wealth of food available. Three areas that can be combined with it are essential to its daily life: the hunting area, the rest area, and the hide-and-seek area. If they are dissociated, it circulates from one to the other throughout its life.
It is, therefore, necessary to determine according to the season where the fario trout may be located when it is confined to a hunting area. Here comes the knowledge that everyone has of fish evolving in their element and the experience of the fisherman practicing with bait who knows how to quickly recognize favorable positions, often at first glance.
This is what makes one fisherman rather than another regularly catch trout: his sense of analysis and reading of the water is already very sharp and ingrained in him, become as innate. The result of long hours of fishing for natural bait with pleasure and passion. The technique which accompanies this knowledge has a lot to do with it and also asserts itself over time.
The trout will be able to be placed outside of the too agitated waters, it is necessary to look for it in all the zones where the waves calm down. If the waters tended to turn white with snow, do not panic, fishing is still possible and trout can be caught. Each season has its positions to focus on and in the springless turbulent areas like the back of boulders, the edges, the pits, the eddies, the rear of obstacles… are the moves that you will have to prospect in priority.
I will not spend any more time on the subject of spring trout fishing, if you are looking to learn a little more and find many tips for tackling the river during this period, I invite you to read the article from my blog which refers to it: “Tips for fishing for toc for the start of the season”. This article includes a two-part memo written for the Pezon & Michel website:
- Trout tock at the opening, 1st part (the state of the waters, the bait, the line, the accessories and their transport, the reel)
- Trout au toc au opening, part 2 (case of the small river and fishing action, case of the big river and fishing action)
Unlike spring, summer allows you to fish the river in all of its areas. The low water encourages movement and visiting the river becomes easy. It remains to discover the good positions of the moment to fish.
The generality is simple and understandable. In contrast to spring, it is necessary to favor areas of white water where the transport of food is constant and freshwater. Summer is the period during which the trout grows most quickly and stores fat reserves in anticipation of the return to winter and the difficult reproductive period.
To help you understand the reading of water and the positions that are more or less buoyant and suitable for drift fishing with natural bait, I wrote another article for you visible on the site of my partner Pezon & Michel. Thanks to numerous photographic illustrations, you will be able to understand and decipher the various blows encountered in general on a medium / large river,
You will only have to identify the positions where the trout activity is present to make a good catch, note that the carrying blows can be brought to change during the day according to a change of weather, a wind turning, a slight tidal range due to a blow of the valve, sunshine …, be attentive to all this.
Principles of live bait fishing in whitewater commonly known as “toc fishing”
To fishing has many facets, its practice is different according to regions and rivers. The equipment, the attitude, the king baits, the good times … the manners of the fishermen change when the environments change (and a fortiori the behavior of the fish). But the practice of faking has basic rules, it is up to us to know and appropriate them, to apply them as best as possible concerning the fishing destination and its traditions, it is up to us to adapt ourselves to the territory and its particular hydrographic network.
The main outlines of fishing for toc and its principles, I have already mentioned them. You can find them on the page of my blog dedicated to this practice.
Line assembly and bait for fishing with toc
The line assembly is conventionally composed as such: a marker or wire guide, a swivel, sinkers, and a hook. To fish in natural drift, we choose to fish with a fluorescent line body of diameter 14/00 in general to follow the movement of the line but also to interpret the keys more easily. While the tip of the line finished with the hook is discreet and made with a transparent monofilament in 12/00, 11/00, or 10/00 depending on the season and the average size of the fish present in the area.
The hook must respect the choice of bait, size and color must be chosen accordingly. Ditto for the sinker which must, on the one hand, respect the density of the bait used and on the other hand take into account the flow rate and the average weight required to keep the bait close to the bottom in a natural way, without excessively unbalancing the passage of our assembly in the vein of carrying water (under penalty of being shunned by lady trout). The wire guide and swivel should, if possible, be chosen as small as possible while ensuring their primary functionality. The guide is a triple indicator of position, line depth, and touch. The swivel allows the neon/monofilament thread connection and avoids the spinning effects when recovering the line.
When it comes to living baits, you can choose aquatic larvae preferably picked up on the spot, shore worms, or, in the absence of soil, maggots fly in strong heat, ringworms, maggots where the regulations allow, grasshoppers and crickets at altitude, caterpillars… The list is far from exhaustive as the small animals arriving naturally or accidentally at the bedside of the trout are numerous. It is up to us to make the right choice concerning the season and the likely food of the moment. So watch and try!
After these reminders, you are ready to tackle the river whatever the period and implement your natural bait fishing practice to capture the queen of whitewater, now that you know the typical positions where the trout positions themselves according to seasons, all you have to do is set up a good practice to quickly touch some fish. It’s your turn!
